Avalon Airport expansion improves access to Geelong & The Great Ocean Road

Tuesday, 22 June 2010

Roger Grant, Geelong Otway Tourism said in response “So far, a lot of the focus on Tiger Airways decision to fly-out of Avalon is on exotic destinations elsewhere in Australia, particularly the Gold Coast.   There is of course another exotic destination that has been opened up by Tiger Airways’ decision – Geelong and its surrounds. Which means that by announcing that two new A320 planes will be based at Avalon from November, Tiger Airways becomes a welcome and important ally in Geelong Otway Tourism’s constant campaigns to increase awareness about and visitors to the region.”

The addition of all five aircraft for the state means the creation of more than 200 jobs for Victoria (through flight crew, ground handling and maintenance partnership positions) and enables the airline to continue to add more capacity on popular low fare routes to and from Victoria.

Tiger Airways Australia Managing Director, Crawford Rix, says that the announcement is further evidence of the significant commitment to Victoria that Australia’s newest and fastest growing major domestic airline is making. “We’re also thrilled to announce that our first flights will depart from Avalon Airport on 10 November 2010 with the inaugural flight en route to the Gold Coast – our first confirmed destination from Avalon.”

“Our region is a worthy part of big Three R’s of Australian tourism – the Rock, the Reef and the Road. In fact it has recently been described as the “journey of a life time” in and the world’s number one self drive destination by prominent travel magazines in Europe and North America. By using the wonders of the Great Ocean Road with both its natural beauty and its now fabled place in history as the world’s biggest war memorial, we are always bringing lots of people to the whole region” Said Roger Grant.

Tickets are now on sale for flights between Avalon Airport and Gold Coast from just $45* one way. The new services from Avalon will complement services from Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport. The Brumby Labor Government welcomed the announcement to bring more aircraft to Victoria, generating further significant economic and tourism benefits for the State.
