Last week saw the Targa Florio motor sport event make its mark abroad, stepping outside of its Italian heritage in Sicily for the first time in its 101 Year History.

Not only was Australia the lucky destination receiving the privilege of hosting the 4-day Tribute event, but specifically our local region – including Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula and the Great Ocean road – finishing up with the great look back over Geelong’s skyline from The Pier Geelong whilst enjoying a fabulous dinner together.

Before Formula 1 racing, the Targa Florio was known as the most difficult and challenging car race, attracting the great racing car drivers and the most important international car makers. For over 80 years, it has stood as a symbol of passion for cars, luxury and elegance.

Today, the Targa Florio is not just the world’s most ancient road race, but a tribute to classic cars and beautiful scenery. It is both a race and historical tribute for the legendary cars that participated in the original race and now also includes, the ever-popular, Ferrari Tribute.

Stage 1 of the Targa Florio Australian Tribute (TRAT) on Thursday, 30th November included participants making their way along the Geelong Waterfront for all locals to see as they commenced the event. After a 90km journey along the Bellerine Peninsula, the convoy returned to Geelong town for dinner at The Pier Geelong.

The unique location, 250 metres out over the water at the end of the Cunningham Pier, was also a prime setting for the participants to line their classic cars along either side of the Pier for all to see. With a picturesque backdrop of the water, many members of the public were mesmerised by the unique international vehicles in front of them, and the participants were very accommodating in giving the public this opportunity.

Across the next 3 days that followed, participants were set to travel along the Great Ocean Road towards Lorne, and then back up the stunning coastline towards Queenscliff before being transported on the Ferry to Sorento. After then making their way through the Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland and the Yarra Valley, participants were to round out the Tribute through Marysville before finishing in Melbourne at The Docklands, Melbourne, after a total of 1095km journey.

The Pier Geelong, and Greater Geelong have been honoured to be involved in such a remarkable event, particularly in marking history as the first time the race has left Italy.
